Staggered intermittent fillet weld symbol
Intermittent fillets on both faces of a joint, offset so a weld on one side sits opposite a gap on the other. The two triangles are drawn out of line to signal the offset.
Reads as: Arrow side: fillet weld, 3/16 size, 1-1/2 long, 5 pitch. Other side: fillet weld, 3/16 size, 1-1/2 long, 5 pitch.
How to read it
A staggered pattern is an intermittent fillet on each face of the joint, with the two patterns shifted relative to one another so the segments alternate down the joint. The information content is the same as any intermittent callout — size on the left, length and pitch on the right — but it appears twice, once above and once below the reference line.
The offset itself is carried by how the two triangles are drawn rather than by a number. When the symbol above the line is shifted along the reference line so it does not sit directly opposite the symbol below it, the pattern is staggered. When the two triangles line up vertically, the segments are meant to be opposite each other. That is the single visual cue, and it is easy to miss on a busy drawing or a poor scan.
The shift on the part is normally half the pitch, which places each weld opposite the middle of the gap on the far side. Designers reach for the arrangement to spread heat input along the joint, keep distortion down on long thin members, and put weld metal where it does the most good without paying for continuous fillets on both faces.
Both sides usually carry the same size, length, and pitch, and when they do not, treat them as two separate instructions and lay out each face on its own. If the drawing needs the stagger to start at a particular end or feature, expect a note beside the symbol, because the notation itself does not encode a starting reference.
Where each dimension goes
- Size (left of each triangle)
- Leg length of the segments on that face of the joint.
- Length (first number right of each triangle)
- Run length of one segment on that face.
- Pitch (second number right of each triangle)
- Centre-to-centre spacing of segments on that face.
- Offset between the two triangles
- Drawing the upper and lower symbols out of alignment is what says the two patterns are staggered rather than opposed.
- Stagger distance on the part
- Usually half the pitch, so each weld faces the middle of the gap on the far side.
Worked examples
Staggered 2-6 pattern
“Run 1/4 fillets two inches long on six-inch centres, staggered side to side.”
Each face carries the same 2-6 intermittent callout. Because the triangles are drawn offset rather than opposed, the welds on one face land opposite the three-inch gaps on the other.
Continuous one side, staggered relief on the other
“Weld the arrow side continuous at 1/4 and add 1/4 segments two inches on ten-inch centres opposite.”
The lower triangle has no length, so that face is welded full length. The upper triangle carries a 2-10 pair, making the far face an intermittent backup rather than a matching run.
Common mistakes
- Missing the offset in how the two triangles are drawn and welding the segments directly opposite each other.
- Inventing a stagger dimension when the drawing gives none. Half the pitch is the usual practice unless a note says otherwise.
- Applying one face's length and pitch to the other face when the two callouts actually differ.
- Starting both faces from the same end without shifting the second run, which cancels the whole point of the pattern.
